Mr. Merrick took the eighth grade students to the Vietnam War Museum as a culminating activity in their study of the Cold War. During the Cold War unit of study, students presented in class on a variety of Cold War subjects, including the space race, the Cuban Missile Crisis and U.S. fears around the spread of communism. Two students did in-depth reports on the Vietnam War, so Mr. Merrick planned this trip to give the students an up-close look at a US soldier’s experience of Vietnam. There were six veterans on hand to guide the group and answer questions. The museum is very ‘hands-on’. Students were able to sit in the planes and helicopters, pick up weapons, wear helmets and flak jackets, and generally feel what it was like for soldiers.  Anyone interested in learning more is invited to visit on Veterans Day, 11-11.
